ScreenPlay SP5000 LCD projector

Charlie White has a review of the InFocus ScreenPlay SP5000 LCD projector at macdesignpro.com. If you are looking for a HDTV compatible projector aimed at the home theater market check out the review.

InFocus recently released its ScreenPlay SP5000 LCD projector ($1900 street), a small and lightweight projector aimed at the home theater market. After putting it through its paces at DMN's Midwest Test Facility theater, our conclusion is decidedly positive. Its HDTV compatibility and high performance showed us how far LCD projection technology has come in the past two years, where the SP5000 showed very few of the weaknesses attributed to LCD projectors while exploiting the technology's inherent strengths. Here's our hands-on review.

You get a lot for your projector dollar these days, where $2000 will buy you a home theater light cannon that will put all but the largest LCD flat panels to shame. It's hard to duplicate that huge-screen, darkened theater experience using a flat panel LCD . But then you need a nice dark room, preferably a dedicated space for home theater when using a projector , and not everybody has that available. But for those who do, that's where the InFocus SP5000 can literally shine. Even though it's not as bright as any of the DLP-based models we've tested here, it still fits the home-theater bill nicely. more...

Sony develops new LCD display panels for projectors

Martyn Williams

Sony has refined an existing liquid crystal display (LCD) technology to come up with a display that it claims will give projectors a crisper picture.

The company said the display panels, which were based on High-Temperature Polysilicon LCD technology, offered a five-fold improvement in contrast ratio at around 2000:1 and 10 per cent better light transmittance compared to panels currently used in most of Sony's front-projectors. Front projectors are used to project an image onto the front of a wall or white screen.

The LCD panels were able to deliver a picture of quality roughly between that available from standard projectors and that from Sony's high-end Qualia 004 projector, which used Sony's proprietary SXRD display panel technology, a Sony spokesperson, David Yang, said. more...

Review: InFocus LP600 - DLP Data Projector

The good people over at TrustedReviews have a new review of the InFocus LP600 - DLP Data Projector online.

InFocus has been manufacturing projectors for a very long time. In fact, many of the projectors that you see from other manufacturers are often re-badged InFocus models. Although InFocus does produce some very good home cinema based projectors, its main market data projectors. Data projectors are generally split into two categories, fixed and portable. Fixed projectors tend to find themselves mounted to ceilings in board rooms, while portable projectors are used as tools for mobile workers that need to give presentations to clients.

The LP600 falls into the latter category, and it has to be said that it's a very small and light unit. This isn't the smallest or lightest projector you can buy, or even the smallest and lightest model that InFocus sells, but it does offer a very tempting combination of features and portability. more...

Texas Instruments DLP Products Announces 5 Million Units Shipped

Texas Instruments announced that is has shipped its 5 millionth DLP™ subsystem, reflecting the increased demand and growth of DLP products within the last year. It took five years, from 1996 to 2001, to ship the first million DLP units, and just under two years to ship the second. TI announced its 3 millionth shipment in March 2004, and has shipped the last 2 million DLP units in just 8 months.

The advantages of DLP technology, including no burn-in or fading, deep rich colors, and incredible, industry-leading contrast have led more and more manufacturers to choose DLP technology. The inherent speed advantage of DLP technology also allows for a 1-chip architecture that provides razor-sharpness that will not misconverge over time, and excellent reproduction of fast video such as sports and live action, with no motion lag.

Continued manufacturer innovation and differentiation has led to increasing momentum around DLP-based projectors and DLP TVs: DLP Front Projection products have experienced nine consecutive quarters of gain bringing DLP to 40% marketshare worldwide; continued expansion in customers and products in the DLP TV category has led to more than 75 DLP TVs available on the market at more than 11,000 retail outlets; and 100% of digital cinema screens are equipped with DLP Cinema™ technology.

“We continue to be impressed with the pioneering work of our customers around DLP technology and look forward to seeing entirely new categories of products and cutting-edge designs at CES in January,” said John Van Scoter, General Manager, DLP Products, SVP Texas Instruments. “Our goal is to provide DLP imaging solutions to our customers that allow them to offer consumers an immersive visual experience. It is ultimately about the experience our customers products create.”

Texas Instruments DLP™ Products and many of its customers will be at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 6-9 to showcase what is new and exciting with DLP TVs and home entertainment projectors.

Hitachi America Introduces Performa CP-RS55 High-Performance, Dual-Use LCD Projectors

New projector represents the future of display technology, allowing for use in the office and home with no sacrifice in performance

With an eye towards an evolving industry that is placing equal emphasis on versatility and high performance, Hitachi America has introduced a new projector that sets the standard for projection in both the professional and consumer markets. The Hitachi Performa(TM) CP-RS55 meets and exceeds performance requirements for corporate and residential use, while its light weight and portability finally makes dual use in the home and the office a reality. The suggested street price has been targeted at $899.

"The expectations for performance in video displays has risen consistently in recent years, and projector manufacturers have responded with advanced technology that allows for increasingly brighter and clearer images," said Pete Denes, director of sales for Hitachi America. "However, until now, the market has struggled to develop a projector that can be transported from the office to the home and back while maintaining the current standards of quality. The Performa(TM) CP-RS55 dramatically alters the face of the marketplace with its ability to transcend the notion that projectors are limited to use in fixed locations."

With a brightness of 1,500 ANSI lumens but weighing only 4.84 pounds, the new Hitachi Performa(TM) CP-RS55 projector features the high-end performance required for use in corporate, as well as small business environments, and an intuitive user interface makes it ideal for home use.

Additionally, the Performa(TM) CP-RS55 model features Progressive Scan Technology, which lets users enjoy realistically beautiful images with no flicker. Its Equalizing function (Gamma Correction and Color Balance) lets users make adjustments to achieve the desired picture quality, and three Picture Mode settings (Normal, Cinema and Dynamic) allows users to choose the best mode to match the source.

Lastly, the Performa(TM) also allows for a Whisper Mode option, which reduces fan noise to 32 dB. This provides quiet performance in a variety of applications, from the living room to the boardroom or classroom.

New Micro Projector from Mitsubishi Digital Electronics Packs Power in 3-Pound Package; Mitsubishi Mini-Mits XD60U Does Double Duty from Work to Home

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 9, 2004--Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America's Presentation Products Division, maker of award-winning high-quality presentation and display products, today introduced its newest, smallest projector, the Mini-Mits(R) XD60U. The new Mini-Mits projector shines 1800 ANSI-lumens on any road-warrior's bright ideas, and it weighs only 3.3 pounds for easy portability from office to home.

"Our new Mini-Mits XD60U is the sexy convertible sports car of our projector line, cute and compact but really powerful," said James Chan, director, projector product marketing for Mitsubishi. "It moves easily from professional environments to at-home big screen movie nights, and even accepts HDTV signals up to 1080i."

Offering native XGA (1024 x 768 pixels) resolution, the Mini-Mits XD60U incorporates DLP(TM) chip technology along with a remarkable contrast ratio of 2,000:1. This combination provides crisp, fine details even in the darkest images and shadowed areas while its long-life lamp features up to 2,000 hours in low mode. The projector accepts analog, digital and even HDTV signals, making the Mini-Mits XD60U projector versatile for use on the road and temptingly small and powerful enough to bring home for the biggest screen at-home movie night.

Security features are important for a projector this small, and the Mini-Mits XD60U features a Kensington password-protected security lock designed to inhibit unauthorized use at workplace presentation venues.

"Our customers often ask for more functionality from smaller, lighter and brighter projectors," said Aki Ninomiya, vice president, Mitsubishi. "We're happy to introduce the new Mini-Mits XD60U, which expands our product capabilities by incorporating a new, affordable dimension of home use to our projector line's value set."

Pricing, Availability, Warranty

Estimated retail price on Mitsubishi's new XD60U is $2,495, and it is currently available through authorized Mitsubishi Digital dealers and retail outlets. The Mini-Mits XD60U projector comes with Mitsubishi Digital's 3-year limited warranty on parts and labor plus a 90-day limited warranty on the lamp. And like all Mitsubishi Digital XGA ColorView projectors, the XD60U is covered by the Express Replacement Assistance (ERA) Program, a nationwide comprehensive service provided for units under warranty that offers next-business-day replacement for down units.
