DISH Network Introduces DishFAMILY Programming

DISH Network Introduces DishFAMILYDISH Network Becomes Provider of Choice with Lowest Priced Most Robust Family Tier DISH Network Becomes Provider of Choice with Lowest Priced, Most Robust Family Tier

EchoStar Communications Corporation today announced that its DISH Network(TM) satellite TV service will offer "DishFAMILY," a new "family-friendly" programming package with approximately 40 channels. With the launch of a new tier of programming options, DISH Network gives consumers the most choice among pay TV providers when it comes to designing a TV package that meets the needs of their family and budget.

Available Feb. 1, "DishFAMILY" will offer channel choices for everyone in the family such as sports, news, children's programming, lifestyle, hobbies, shopping and public interest. With DishFAMILY, customers will get valuable, family-sensitive content at the low price of $19.99 per month ($24.99 per month with local channels). This is an approximate $12 savings over the average cable company family tier. This low-priced package further establishes DISH Network as the lowest all-digital TV provider in the nation.

Other pay-TV providers have introduced "family" packages but with fewer channels and with a requirement that customers must purchase the "family" package along with a basic cable package that could be full of "inappropriate" family material. DISH Network offers DishFAMILY as a stand-alone package and with the most robust "family" package lineup. In addition, DishFAMILY is available with a free satellite TV receiver and free professional installation for up to four rooms.

"With the introduction of DishFAMILY, DISH Network becomes the pay-TV provider of choice among parents who want the most parental control and the largest package of family-specific TV channels, all at the lowest cost," said Eric Sahl, senior vice president of Programming for DISH Network. "DishFAMILY is a package our customers have requested, and we are pleased that congressional hearings and the FCC have played a key role in encouraging programmers to agree to give DISH Network the rights to offer a family pack."

"DISH Family" channel lineup will include the following:

Animal Planet EWTN Outdoor Channel
The Biography Channel Food Network RFDTV
Bloomberg TV Fox News Channel Shop at Home
Boomerang Great American Country ShopNBC
BYUTV CNN Headline News The Science Channel
C-SPAN HSN The Weather Channel
C-SPAN-2 NASA TBN
CSTV Nickelodean East TV Land
Discovery Kids Nickelodean West QVC
Discovery Times Nick Games & Sports (More to be announced soon.)
Do It Yourself Network NickToons

DISH Network, an advocate of family values, has been a pioneer in advanced parental controls technology available to customers at no additional cost. DISH Network's extensive parental controls include password protection, lock-by-ratings and extended ratings, system and channel locks, and DISH Network's own Adult Guard and Hide Adult Programming features, which when activated remove adult content and channel descriptions from that specific customer's program guide. Also, for customers who subscribe to DishFAMILY, adult channels and their content descriptions will be unavailable in the program guide.

DishHD, Featuring Local HD Channels and New VOOM HD Channels. Most National Content plus World's First MPEG4 HD DVR Establishes DISH Network as Industry Leader for HDTV

EchoStar Communications Corporation and its DISH Network satellite TV service announced today from the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show the rollout of its new high-definition television package, DishHD. By offering the most HD channels in the pay-TV industry and with the introduction of a new line of advanced satellite receivers, DishHD gives its customers more than 1,700 hours a week of HD content from the nation's top programmers.

DISH Network is expanding its HD channel lineup in 2006 by adding five new original VOOM channels -- bringing the total to 15 -- as well as other new HD networks including ESPN2 HD and Universal HD. In addition, DISH Network will launch high-definition local channels through its satellite service in up to 50 markets in 2006, starting with Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York in February, and reaching more than 50 percent of U.S. TV households with local HD channels. The remainder of the country's local HD channels will be offered to DISH Network customers via an off-air antenna solution.

DishHD offers 25 national HD channels plus local broadcast channels where available, providing more than 200 hours of HD programming every day. Cable companies, with a national average of just 10 HD channels, cannot come close to the robust lineup of DishHD.

With up to four different programming packages to choose from, DishHD customers can find an option that best fits their viewing needs. For as little as $54.99 a month, customers can access the entire 25-channel DishHD lineup, and get more than 70 all-digital standard definition channels plus their local channels in standard and high definition.

Current DishHD channels include:

VOOM Networks
Discovery HD ESPN HD Animania HD
Monsters HD HBO HD Equator HD
Rave HD HD Net Film Fest HD
Rush HD HD Net Movies Gallery HD
Ultra HD HD Pay-Per-View HD News
Kung Fu HD Showtime HD TNT HD

On Feb. 1, DISH Network will begin transmitting newly added HD channels in MPEG4, a signal compression standard developed by MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group). MPEG4 allows DISH Network to maximize the bandwidth available on its satellites and offer the most robust lineup of HD channels in the nation.

New DishHD channels available only in MPEG4 include:

VOOM Networks
ESPN2 HD Universal HD
Family Room HD HD Locals
Gameplay HD Treasure HD
World Cinema HD WorldSport HD

DISH Network is also introducing at CES a new series of satellite receivers that combine MPEG4 and MPEG2 signal capability. The cutting-edge ViP Series combines state-of-the-art imaging technology with life-like Dolby(R) Digital 5.1 surround sound for the best picture and sound quality available. Existing customers with MPEG2 equipment, such as the DISH Player DVR 942, will continue to receive all their current content and will need to upgrade to a ViP Series receiver to receive the new HD channels. DISH Network will offer a convenient upgrade package for existing customers who want to expand their HD lineup to include the new channels.

The ViP211(TM) HD satellite receiver, the first model in the ViP series that supports both MPEG4 and MPEG2, is available through DISH Network for only $49.99 for new lease customers.

Also included in the ViP series is the ViP622(TM) DVR, the world's first MPEG4 multi-room high definition and digital video recorder satellite TV receiver with the ability to view independent programs -- one in high definition and one in standard definition programming -- on two televisions at once. No other pay-TV company offers this innovative combination. It features a massive hard drive with a recording capacity of up to 25 hours of high-definition and up to 180 hours of standard-definition content.

The cutting-edge ViP622 DVR also features reverse, fast-forward, and pause as well as a picture-in-picture feature on any TV and the ability to record Dolby Digital(R) when available. The ViP622 DVR will be available in the first quarter of 2006 for a one-time upgrade price of $299 for new lease customers, which includes a dish antenna and free standard professional installation (monthly DVR fee applies).

The ViP622 DVR also features:

  • Digital/analog off-air tuner

  • Up to 9-day, Picture-In-Guide, Widescreen Electronic Program Guide (EPG)

  • High-Definition Resolutions: 480p, 720p, 1080i (480i is up-converted)

  • Records two programs simultaneously in high definition, but programs can be viewed in standard definition on other TVs in the home.

The ViP622 DVR offers DISH Network's convenience and features that customers have grown to depend on, including parental controls, electronic program guide, picture in guide and name-based recording.

DISH Network to Aid Disaster Victims

DISH Network has begun efforts to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina by raising money and providing satellite television service to shelters across Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

As of today, DISH Network had set up TV service in nine shelters, including Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, which will receive about 25,000 refugees. DISH Network is in the process of establishing service in dozens of other Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Agency shelters.

DISH Network has also reinforced its Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi installation crews with a fleet of hundreds of vans and technicians from around the country to support the needs of DISH Network subscribers and retailers during extremely difficult circumstances. And DISH Network has found ways to make local channels available to customers in affected areas so those customers can continue to receive local news and weather reports.

"We're focused on helping ensure that DISH Network customers as well as hurricane refugees get the critical news and information they need during this devastating period," said Michael Neuman, president of EchoStar and DISH Network.

DISH Network employees across the nation have responded to the disaster by helping the Red Cross, donating time to shelters, and raising funds.

EchoStar Communications Corporation, the company that operates the DISH Network satellite TV service, has implemented a fund-raising drive for its 20,000 employees. EchoStar will match all contributions made by its employees, a program that could generate as much as $1 million if every employee donates just $25.

"We hope to raise as much money as possible for people who have been affected by this terrible tragedy. We will match every dollar that is donated by our employees in an effort to help these communities get back on their feet," said Michael Neuman, president of EchoStar.

New DISH Network Campaign Promises 'Better TV for All'

EchoStar Communications Corporation and its DISH Network(TM) satellite TV service have unveiled a dynamic, nationwide branding and advertising campaign with a money-saving offer for new customers. The campaign, declaring that DISH Network is "Better TV for All," will appeal particularly to dissatisfied cable customers.

Based on public reports, 1.2 million households have switched to satellite TV since January, bringing satellite's share of pay-TV users to more than 25 percent. According to a recent survey conducted by the Leichtman Research Group, Inc., 60 percent of former digital cable subscribers who maintain a pay-TV subscription cite expense and "poor value" as the top reasons for dropping the service. DISH Network's new campaign alerts dissatisfied cable customers to the better option of satellite TV.

Simply stated, "Better TV for All" means DISH Network offers the lowest all-digital price in America, with award-winning customer satisfaction and the latest technology.

"Research indicates that most cable subscribers don't know the benefits of satellite TV," said Michael Neuman, president and chief operating officer of EchoStar. "A significant percentage of them have no idea that DISH Network is less expensive than digital cable despite DISH Network's lowest all-digital price in America. This new campaign will educate those unhappy cable TV watchers."

A Federal Communications Commission (FCC) report on cable industry prices released in February confirmed that DISH Network programming packages cost 20 percent less than those typically offered by digital cable.

The "Better TV for All" campaign promotes DISH Network's commitment to protect television viewers across the country from inferior picture quality, sub-standard customer service and outrageous prices forced upon them by cable providers.

The campaign's new elements include updated graphics, a re-designed website and an edgy television, print and radio advertising effort. The advertisements serve as a wake-up call to people who have endured over-priced digital cable service too long.

"Our new campaign and positioning statement, 'Better TV for All,' aims to remind people how unhappy they are with their current cable-TV service," said Jody Martin, DISH Network senior vice president of Marketing. "We want everyone to know that they have a better choice in pay TV, and it's DISH Network."

Celebrating the campaign, DISH Network is offering new customers one month free service and three free months of HBO, Showtime and Cinemax when they sign up for any qualifying programming package. The offer comes complete with free standard professional installation, no hardware to buy and a free digital video recorder (DVR) equipment upgrade with an 18-month commitment. The basic package, America's Top 60, includes more than 60 all-digital channels, with locals in more than 160 markets, for only $31.99 per month following the first month.

DISH Network Passes 11 Million Customer Milestone

Company Now Third Largest Pay-TV Provider

In the last five years, DISH Network has added more than 7.6 million net new customers. DISH Network passed the 10 million customer milestone in June 2004.

"We are pleased that one out of every 10 U.S. households now subscribes to DISH Network, an achievement that took just over eight years," said Charles Ergen, chairman and chief executive officer of EchoStar. MDU Communications Begins Roll Out of New DIRECTV Program Designed Specifically for the Multi-Dwelling Unit Market

MDU Communications, a leading end-to-end provider of DIRECTV(R) digital satellite television programming and high speed broadband Internet services to the 26 million United States residential multi-dwelling unit ("MDU") market, today announces that it has entered into an agreement with DIRECTV, Inc. for the roll out of Bulk/Choice Advantage ("BCA"), an important new satellite video program specifically tailored to capture and increase penetration into the MDU market. This new agreement signifies DIRECTV's continued response and commitment to the unique technological, marketing and demographic challenges of the multi-family market.

The BCA program was developed in response to multi-dwelling unit property owners wanting to provide their residents with a high quality basic video package and also the option to individually and cost effectively upgrade to the full array of DIRECTV programming services.

"Our new Bulk/Choice Advantage program will provide property owners with the flexibility to offer their residents entertainment programming options and at the same time provide an easy way to upgrade so they can access the full DIRECTV digital experience," said Daren Benzi, vice president of Sales Development and Strategy, DIRECTV, Inc. "We believe the BCA program will significantly expand new business opportunities for our MDU system operators and we are pleased to launch it with MDU Communications, a long-time, valued partner."

The BCA program bundles approximately 70 high quality DIRECTV individual programming channels (including local channels) into a DIRECTV approved private cable service package sold by the Company on a "bulk" basis to property owners for all residential units to access. For a nominal monthly fee, each individual resident can "upgrade" to the DIRECTV TOTAL CHOICE(R) programming package which offers more than 60 additional digital programming channels, as well as giving residents the ability to access all DIRECTV services including premium movie services, High Definition Television (HDTV), Pay Per View movies and events, NFL SUNDAY TICKET(TM), foreign language programming, and more.

"The BCA program will greatly increase penetration rates in MDU properties because it can simultaneously capture residents who want simply a basic television service, as well as residents who demand more from their television viewing," said Sheldon Nelson, President of MDU Communications. "It is a well designed program aimed specifically at a large segment of the multi-family market previously served by franchised cable television providers, and its introduction has been met with a very positive response by property owners, developers and residents," added Nelson.

The new BCA program has been test launched with much success to select MDU Communications' client property owners in the Northeast, Southeast, and Midwest. In the Northeast, two prominent clients have signed access agreements with the Company for BCA deployment to certain properties within their respective portfolios. Today, the Company provides DIRECTV services to approximately 2,500 residents within these two portfolios, however should the initial BCA property launches prove successful, the Company expects to deploy the BCA program of DIRECTV services to many of the 42,000 residential units within these two portfolios. The Company will begin offering the BCA program to all of its existing clients and to prospective clients in the Northeast, Southeast and Midwest in January of 2005.
