DISH Network's lowest all-digital price and its award-winning customer service have prompted record numbers of consumers to switch from cable over the years, allowing DISH Network to pass Time Warner Cable as the third largest pay-TV provider in the United States.
In the last five years, DISH Network has added more than 7.6 million net new customers. DISH Network passed the 10 million customer milestone in June 2004.
"We are pleased that one out of every 10 U.S. households now subscribes to DISH Network, an achievement that took just over eight years," said Charles Ergen, chairman and chief executive officer of EchoStar. "Television viewers have signaled their demand for quality programming, affordable prices, and top-notch customer service; and DISH Network excels at all three. With the lowest cost, all-digital TV service, plus the top ranking in customer satisfaction surveys, DISH Network is an easy choice for the 110 million U.S. households seeking home entertainment."
DISH Network has also established a reputation as the innovator in the pay-TV industry, becoming the first to offer digital video recorders at no cost, the first to offer a DVR that lets consumers record and watch two different shows simultaneously, and the first to offer a high definition DVR. Early this year, DISH Network will also offer a multi-room DVR that records in high definition, plus a DVR that will allow DISH Network to offer true video on demand -- a first for satellite providers.
DISH Network also offers customers 100 international channels in more than 25 languages, the most popular sports packages, the most popular high definition programming, the widest selection of interactive programming, and local channels in 152 markets and all 50 states, representing more than 93 percent of all U.S. television households.
Here are year-end subscriber numbers for DISH Network since its inception (in millions, as of Dec. 31 of that year):
EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH) serves more than 11 million satellite TV customers through its DISH Network(TM), the fastest growing U.S. provider of advanced digital television services in the last four years. DISH Network offers hundreds of video and audio channels, Interactive TV, HDTV, sports and international programming, together with professional installation and 24-hour customer service. NEW YORK - Verizon Communications Inc. plans to use Microsoft Corp. technology for its rollout of television service over a new fiber-optic network, becoming the third major telephone company to help fulfill Microsoft's long-stymied bid to barge into the TV business.
The software maker's platform initially will be used to provide an interactive program guide, high-definition television, digital video recording and video-on-demand for Verizon's FiOS TV service, which is due to launch in undisclosed markets around mid-year.
Verizon, which is spending billions to replace its copper phone lines with speedy fiberglass cables, also expects to exploit the technology's Internet-based capabilities to roll out more advanced interactive services down the road, the companies planned to announce Monday. more...
Now that the Google Video Search is in beta, someone(hint for the people at TiVo, Inc and Google Inc) needs to figure out a way to integrate that with TiVo content already recorded.
It would be really cool to be able to search recorded video files on TiVo based on the spoken content. Imagine being able to find an episode of a show you like based on lines you remember hearing on that episode.

This cable customer's story is crazy. Someone should make a movie about this, oh wait, it's been done already. If you've had a similar or worse experience post it in the comments.
Cable's bad image endures even as companies hone, expand service
PHILADELPHIA - All Nita Martin wanted was to straighten out a billing problem with her cable company. What she got was a Comcast Corp. subcontractor screaming in her face and refusing to leave her house.
This was last June, when Martin and Comcast were tangling over a digital cable bill. The subcontractor showed up to disconnect her cable and "went into a rage" when she rebuffed his attempt to get her to stay with Comcast, Martin recalls.
The police eventually showed up and ordered the subcontractor to leave, but Martin, 56, who lives in the Philadelphia suburb of Wallingford, was so shaken that she took anti-anxiety pills for weeks to calm her nerves. Comcast, she says, "didn't take it seriously at all."
Martin's story might be extreme, even by the standards of an industry long pilloried for poor customer service, high prices and a lack of competition. But she is hardly alone in her antipathy toward cable. via fortwayne.com

Tatung launches new range of widescreen LCD TVs offering unrivalled price/performance
Tatung, the Taiwanese electronics giant, has introduced a new range of widescreen LCD televisions to the UK market, offering unrivalled price/performance and an inclusive 3-year warranty. RRPs on the new models are "highly competitive", says Tatung, starting at £745 inc VAT (23").
Manufactured by Tatung in Holland, the new models feature a sleek, silver design with built-in NICAM stereo speakers and are HDTV (High Definition TV) compatible. The LCD panel resolution is 1280 x 768 (WXGA) with a super-fine pixel pitch of 0.4 – 0.5 mm, dependent on model.
Tatung technology overcomes the problems of picture "ghosting" apparent on inferior manufacturers' LCD TVs. "Ghosting" or "after imaging" is the result of slow response times – the time it takes for the individual pixels to switch on/off. Most other manufacturers' LCD TVs take 25ms to respond, meaning fast-moving action and sports appear blurred on the TV. Tatung's latest technology offers super-fast response time of half that (ave 12.5ms).
"Picture quality is vital in this market," commented Mark Burnett of Tatung UK. "When you invest in an LCD TV you don't want to take a step backwards in quality. Buyers should take a good look at some of competitors' TVs – it can be impossible to follow the ball when watching sports because of ghosting, for example."
Use it with a PC!
The new LCD panels from Tatung can also be used as a super-size monitor for a desktop PC. The supplied, standard VGA cable simply plugs into a PC in place of the usual screen to provide a panoramic PC experience.
New models in the range include: 32" - £1408 inc VAT; 30" - £1291 inc VAT; 27" - £1056 inc VAT; 23" – £745 in VAT. Prices include swivel base and remote control. An optional VESA wall mount kit is available.
Specifications:
Picture in Picture (PIP) function

LCD or plasma? Trying to decide what to get? Check out the following article from popularmechanics.com
THE ETERNAL QUESTIONS: Pepsi or Coke? Ford or Chevy? Plasma or LCD? It has been only recently that most of us have been able to ponder that last dilemma. Flat-panel TVs may be the ultimate media status symbol, but can you afford one without having to sell your house? Fortunately, flat-panel prices have dropped from the staggering ($12,000 or more for a midsize model) to the merely sobering ($3000 to $4000 for the same size), and last year roughly 2 million of these sets made their way into consumers' homes. With manufacturers pouring cash into factories, prices are set to drop another 25 percent in 2005.
Once you've gotten past the issue of whether to buy a flat-panel set, you confront the greater dilemma of which type to buy. Plasma partisans will tell you that their sets are bigger and more vibrant. LCD devotees will counter that their sets are brighter and last longer. To find out which approach offers the best combination of practicality and performance, we turned to Jeff Sauer, head of the DTV Group Lab, a Pepperell, Mass., video products testing facility. Sauer put each TV through 14 grueling tests to measure brightness, contrast, color, image details and sound. The last two categories were evaluated by using a variety of test footage and video test patterns. When he was done, we assigned a numerical value to each test and added them up for each TV. The result was an overall performance score between 1 and 100. So before you send out those early SuperBowl invites, we suggest a look at our reviews, and our LCD versus plasma comparison chart. more...
Competition intense as DVR market takes off.
TiVo has been synonymous with digital video recording since it pioneered the industry five years ago, controlling an estimated one-third of the market in 2004.
That lofty perch is now beginning to crumble.
Competition in the growing and lucrative industry is intensifying as cable providers, satellite operators and consumer electronics companies push ahead with models of their own, giving consumers more choices while threatening to significantly blunt TiVo Inc.'s (TIVO) edge.
"They're facing a very, very difficult year this year. It'll be increasingly difficult for them to sign up new subscribers," said Josh Bernoff, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Why do you need a TiVo when there's a cable DVR (digital video recorder) for free?" more...
New analysis from TDG Research suggests that IPTV will quickly evolve from a Telco-Only play to hybrid offerings with DBS, DTT and even Cable TV providers.
IPTV, or the distribution of a television service over broadband access lines, will take a turn towards full commercial deployment in 2005. The 2004 launch of services such as Maligne TV and CanalSat DSL in France, FastWeb in Italy, and the announced 2005 TV-over-DSL launch by BellSouth, SBC and Verizon in the United States have propelled this new technology onto the front page of industry attention. "The Business of IPTV: Global Analysis & Forecasts," a new study from TDG Research, suggests that the majority of global IPTV growth will be fueled by hybrid deployments that combine digital satellite or terrestrial TV services with IP-based TelcoTV offerings.
“The television markets around the world vary greatly in terms of incumbent pay television offerings and broadband penetration,” says Hervé Utheza, consulting analyst with TDG Research and a digital media industry executive. “The chances of TelcoTV’s success will vary greatly depending upon the extent to which these two services have penetrated individual geographic markets. In other words, when it comes to identifying the real opportunities for IPTV on a global basis, understanding the specificities of the regional markets is paramount. Hence, our new study covers three specific geographic regions and 28 countries.”
Other important findings of the study include:
•
Worldwide IPTV subscribers will pass the 20 million mark around 2010, a volume dominated by hybrid architectures deployments as opposed to stand-alone TelcoTV VoDSL solutions. IPTV-generated revenue will experience a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 102% between year-end 2004 and year-end 2010.
•
The cross-over point between MPEG-2 video transmission bandwidths and sustained broadband access bandwidths in volume deployments has now been reached, making it possible to deliver a quality digital video service to consumers over a broadband connection. Moreover, more efficient video codec chipsets are now starting to be available in ASIC technology thus making it possible for consumer premise equipment (CPE) to reach low-cost, volume-deployment level prices.
•
The power of IP as a digital video transport technology will rapidly expand beyond TelcoTV operators to affect multiple network topologies. Satellite operators will augment their broadcast offerings with IPTV-based “on-demand” services in order to compete with cable TV players. Additionally, Digital Terrestrial Television or DTT adoption will also benefit greatly from IPTV-based premium offerings.
•
For satellite TV service operators, IPTV will provide a means of extending their current broadcast offering to including on-demand movies and programming, thus allowing them to compete with cable’s new video-on-demand services. IPTV and its more efficient codec technologies are also expected to facilitate the continued growth of HDTV channels, while being poised to enable an extension of their core DBS service beyond the satellite set-top box – for example, to mobile consumer devices connecting to the main satellite receiver.
•
For cable operators, IPTV technologies will play a determining role in the advent of cheaper set-top boxes (STBs), network equipment, and multiplexing devices. In the United States, the New Generation Network Architecture (or NGNA) effort led by CableLabs will be the foundation for the extension of IP-based core networks, able to indifferently deliver video, data and voice over the same network equipment, as close as possible to the consumer home, thus reducing the “last-mile” plant investment.
•
The primary competitive determinants for consumer adoption will be (1) breadth of content offerings, (2) pricing of services, and (3) creation of unique compelling bundled offerings.
•
Early IPTV differentiators will include an “a la carte” pricing model, a move that will put pressure on the traditional business practices of incumbent PayTV operators.
•
TelcoTV adoption around the world will vary greatly, as the penetration of PayTV and broadband differs. In markets such as the United States where PayTV penetration approximates 80%, careful attention must be given to program pricing and packaging, as well as identifying specific target markets.
•
Despite the increased use of IP-based video transport technologies, independent web sites and Internet-based IP TV and video services will remain a niche proposition and may be aggregated or acquired by the larger IPTV operators.
TDG’s new IPTV competitive analysis and forecast, "The Business of IPTV: Global Analysis & Forecasts," is the most comprehensive treatment of global IP-video opportunities available today. The analysis combines a critical examination of the business of IPTV, deconstructing more than fifteen existing IPTV service vendors, the economics of various network and CPE configurations, and detailed forecasts for 28 countries in North America, Europe, and AsiaPac. The report also includes provisional profit/loss analyses using three different incumbent PayTV and broadband penetration models.

Comcast Cable Survey Shows More Than Half of Fans Consider High Definition and Big Screen TV When Deciding Where to Watch the Big Game
America has spoken: high-definition television has taken its place,
alongside friends and food as one of the most important factors for Super
Bowl viewing. In a recent survey, more than a quarter of Americans said
that HDTV has become one of the most critical elements of the Super Bowl
experience. The results of the poll, conducted by ICR/International Communications
Research on behalf of Comcast, the country's leading cable, entertainment
and communications company, also show that, for men, watching the game
in high definition (34%) is as important as the food (37%).
High Def is the Name of the Game
When asked which type of play they would most like to see in high definition,
respondents ranked the touchdown pass (26%) first, with an interception
return (19%) coming in close behind. A high-definition quarterback
sack (12%) ranked third; a popular choice likely influenced by the
crystal clear "crunch" that comes with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. As
for the various elements viewed during the Super Bowl, fans listed
the game (33%), the halftime show (25%) and instant replays (17%) as
the things they most looked forward to watching in high definition.
By gender, men placed cheerleaders second (21%), only after the game
itself (38%), while women look forward to watching the halftime show
(37%) in high definition as much as the game (28%).
Broken Records and Replays of Replays
Who did respondents want to see in the Big Game, on the big screen, in
six times greater clarity? It appears there is a direct correlation
between the desire to see a touchdown pass in high definition and the
quarterback who set the single season NFL record for touchdown passes.
Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts) was the runaway winner with 20
percent of the vote. The rest of the pack was even, garnering 14-15
percent each, and included Michael Vick (Atlanta Falcons), Ben Roethlisberger
(Pittsburgh Steelers), Tom Brady (New England Patriots) and Donovan
McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles). If given the chance to view the Super
Bowl using a Comcast digital video recorder (DVR), "armchair officials" said
the reverse and replay function would be used most often to watch replays
of replays (28%) and scrutinize touchdowns (28%). After those two responses,
fans said that the game's legendary commercials (16%) would get the
most replay action.
Getting into the (High Def) Zone
Heading into 2005, consumers are extremely excited about HDTV; however,
many consumers still are unclear about what's needed to enjoy the HD
experience. The Super Bowl HDTV survey follows an HDTV awareness survey
conducted by Comcast in December that asked consumers their impressions
and understanding of HDTV. In that survey, 40 percent of respondents
said that they didn't know if "just plugging in" an HDTV would bring
high-definition programming to their living rooms.
To help address questions consumers may have as they consider adding
HDTV to their Super Bowl experience, Comcast offers the following tips:
The stands are filling up. The total number of HDTVs shipped to
retailers should hit 13.8 million by the end of this year. That number
is nearly double the 7.8 million HD sets shipped from 1998 until the
end of 2003. (Consumer Electronics Association)
Count the threads on the pigskin. For the ultimate viewing experience,
HDTV offers six times the picture clarity of traditional analog. HDTV
provides the clearest picture available today.
Don't mistake a bench-sitter for a franchise player. To get HDTV's
crystal clarity, make sure the digital television carries an HDTV resolution
of either 720p (progressive) - better for smaller sets - or 1080i (interlaced)
- best for big screens.
Read the scouting report. Make sure you understand what HD programming
your service provider can offer and what equipment is needed. Questions
to ask include: Are premium movie channels available in high definition?
Is there an extra charge for these? Is ON DEMAND included and available
in high definition? Does any special equipment need to be purchased
to receive or record HD programs?
Get the homefield advantage. Only cable can provide local channels
in HD. A high-definition channel requires about five times the bandwidth
of a standard definition channel and, right now, that's too much for
satellite to handle.
Pick up a hot prospect. Digital Video Recorders can be included
in a Comcast HD subscription. With a DVR, consumers can pause and rewind
live action on the television to create personal replays and can easily
record all their favorite programs in HD.
The "Digital Team" gets more popular every year. Programming in
HD has grown considerably in just the last few years. For example,
Comcast's HDTV service includes high-definition broadcasts of most
major networks, ESPN, Discovery HD Theater, HBO, Cinemax, Showtime,
STARZ!, INHD and INHD2 as well as several regional sports networks.
The Super Bowl is not the only thing fans want to watch in high definition.
HD movies are also a hot ticket, and fans overwhelmingly chose Remember
the Titans as the football film they would most like to see in high definition
(29%). The second choice for men was On Any Given Sunday (20%) and, for
women, Jerry McGuire (18%).
"The Super Bowl has become one of the primary drivers for consumer
investment in home entertainment equipment and watching the game in HD
is the next best thing to sitting on the 50-yard line in Jacksonville," said
Dave Watson, executive vice president of operations for Comcast. "Consumers
have many choices when it comes to buying an HD television - from the
type of sets available for purchase, to the growing amount of programming
available, some of which are unique to cable. We want to help consumers
navigate through the many buying choices available today and make it
as easy as possible to enjoy the HD experience."
Comcast "Special Teams" Ready to Go
As consumers prepare for Super Bowl Sunday, Comcast has a presence in
nearly 1,000 retail locations and representatives are available at
many of those sites to help answer questions about HDTVs and HD service.
Visitors to Comcast's website (http://www.comcast.com) also can access
an HD tutorial with Frequently Asked Questions and an HD demo, as well
as sign-up for service online.
The Comcast survey was conducted by ICR/International Communications
Research of Media, PA, between December 27 and 31, 2004, using a random
nationwide sample of 750 households. The results are based on the responses
of households with televisions.

Samsung Corning Precision Supplies First Commercial Quantities of Generation 7 Size Glass Substrates
Through its proprietary fusion technology, Corning continues to be first-to-market with large generation sizes
Corning Incorporated announced today the world's first commercially available thin film transistor (TFT) grade Generation (Gen) 7 glass substrates for active matrix liquid crystal displays (LCD). TFT-grade substrates are ultra-clean, flat, stable, light, and thin glass sheets that meet the exacting quality requirements for the manufacture of notebook computers, LCD TVs, and portable displays. Corning's proprietary fusion technology has enabled first-to-market performance with new generation size TFT-grade substrates, including Gen 5 in 2002 and Gen 6 in 2003.
The Gen 7 substrates are being produced in commercial quantities by Samsung Corning Precision Glass Co. Ltd., jointly owned by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Corning, at its Cheonan, Korea facility.
Large size glass substrates, such as Gen 5.5, 6 and 7 substrates, will be increasingly used as the foundation of LCD television display-panels, as they enable panel manufacturers to produce more and larger displays from a single glass substrate. Gen 7 glass substrates measure 1870 x 2200 mm (approximately 6 feet by 7 feet) and have nearly three times the surface area of Gen 5 substrates, which typically measure 1100 x 1250-1300 mm (approximately 3.5 feet by 4 feet).
"Once again, our customers in the LCD industry presented Corning with a technological challenge and we have risen to meet that challenge," said James P. Clappin, general manager, Corning Display Technologies. "The winning combination of our advanced, proprietary fusion technology and our dedicated team of talented people has positioned us as a worldwide leader in an industry experiencing phenomenal growth."
Lee Suk Jai, president, Samsung Corning Precision added, "The technology team at our Cheonan facility has worked exceptionally hard with our Corning colleagues in making this project a success for our customers here in Korea. Together, we have made the production and supply of this new Gen 7 size possible. This is a major milestone for Corning, Samsung Corning Precision, and our customers as we advance the LCD industry into exciting new territory."
About Corning Incorporated
Corning Incorporated (www.corning.com) is a diversified technology company that concentrates its efforts on high-impact growth opportunities. Corning combines its expertise in specialty glass, ceramic materials, polymers and the manipulation of the properties of light, with strong process and manufacturing capabilities to develop, engineer and commercialize significant innovative products for the telecommunications, flat panel display, environmental, semiconductor, and life sciences industries.
Market-research firm DisplayBank is claiming that prices for large-size TFT-LCD panels are expected to bottom out next month as there is no room for major South Korea panel makers, such as Samsung Electronics and LG.Philips LCD, to cut their 17-inch panel prices any further. However, other market research firms, such as DisplaySearch and Taiwan's Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA), are predicting that the market will not recover that quickly.
Large-size panel prices started slumping from mid-2004, and 17-inch monitor-panel quotes have already fallen below the cash cost of goods sold (with the cost of goods sold not including depreciation), DisplayBank explained. Before the prices began dropping, panel makers were able to take US$92 in profits for each 17-inch panel sold. However, as makers now make no profit on the panels, further price cuts are unlikely, DisplayBank added. more...
I-O Data Integrates ViXS' XCode II Video Processor to Power TV Tuner Card
The Wi-Fi Technology Forum/- ViXS Systems, the leading developer of video processing and networking chipsets and software, today announced that I-O Data Device, Inc., a top-tier manufacturer of high-quality computer peripherals and interface products and the sales leader in Japan's large and fast growing market for video-related PC boards, has chosen the ViXS XCode II silicon video processor as the basis for its GV-MVP/GX single channel TV tuner card.
By leveraging ViXS' XCode II processor and technology, I-O Data will offer after-market TV tuners that enable consumers to upgrade their existing PCs with full personal video recorder (PVR) functionality and unprecedented high-speed DVD recording capabilities.
XCode II is the only video processor that can encode and record captured video to removable media faster than real time. I-O Data's new GV-MVP/GX tuner card maximizes this high speed re-recording capability, giving consumers the power to take content stored on their hard drives and "burn" it to DVD at a blazing 6-times the speed of the video itself in single tuner configurations. A one-hour video can be recorded to DVD in just minutes. No other TV tuner on the market features this speed of re-recording, allowing consumers to quickly and easily archive their favorite television shows or create discs to share content with friends.
"Our technology is ideal for consumers who want to create a personal collection of their favorite TV shows," said Sally Daub, president and chief executive officer of ViXS Systems. "XCode II's efficient encoding reduces DVD-quality video down to 2 Mbps for quickly recording many hours of content to a single disc. Leveraging this technology, I-O Data's new TV tuner enables consumers to affordably turn their existing PCs into multimedia PCs and begin collecting their permanent library of broadcast movies, sports events and entertainment programs."
In addition to giving consumers a quantum leap in DVD burning speed, XCode II allows users of the I-O Data GV-MVP/GX tuner board to re-record up to 50 percent more video content to DVD - as much as eight hours of video to a single disc. Moreover, the re-recording process has no impact on a PC's overall performance. Users can quickly burn DVDs while simultaneously doing other processor-intensive activities.
"We evaluated a number of video encoders in our selection process, but no other product matched the powerful combination of speed and video quality found in ViXS' X-Code II processor," said Mitsukane Kato, Product Manager, Entertainment Unit of I-O Data Device. "By integrating the GV-MVP/GX TV tuner card into their existing PCs, consumers can enjoy all the video functionality of the industry's newest high-end multimedia PCs, but at just a fraction of the price. I-O Data brings high-quality video management within the reach of the average consumer."
The ViXS TV Tuner Board Reference Design is based on the company's XCode II video processor, which allows for MPEG2 encoding as well as incorporates advanced noise filtering and 3D comb filtering features that deliver broadcast-quality video streams and artifact-free image quality at even the lowest bit rates, virtually eliminating the expected "high vs. low bit rate" quality tradeoff. As a result, tuner card and PC OEMs benefit from improved video quality while minimizing their bill of material (BOM) and production costs. The tuner board also improves overall system performance since PCs no longer need to rely on the CPU for video processing. With the ViXS Dual TV Tuner Board, any PC can become a high-performance multimedia center.
Availability
I-O Data's GV-MVP/GX single channel TV tuner card featuring ViXS' XCode II technology will be available in Japan end of January 2005.

Hauppauge MediaMVP Network Media Player Offers Low Cost Networked Audio and Video for Electronic Home Integrators
MediaMVP Priced as Low as $80/Unit; Device can be Mounted Inside Walls or Ceilings, Enabling Music/Video/Photo Playback Over Home Network
Hauppauge Digital, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of digital video, TV, and data broadcast receiver products for personal computers, today announced it is setting a new price/performance standard for electronic home componentry via its MediaMVP® network media player. The announcement, made during the 2005 International Builders Show in Orlando, is good news for home builders and electronic home systems integrators wishing to offer cost effective, PC-ready whole house digital media networks to handle the distribution of music, video and digital pictures around the home.
Hauppauge's MediaMVP allows PC-based Music, Video and Pictures ("MVP") to be played anywhere in the home over a home local area network. The 6" x 6" device, priced as low as $80 per unit in OEM quantities, connects to a home's Cat5e cabling system and can be installed within a wall or ceiling inside a junction box. Speakers, video monitors, TVs and other playback devices are then linked to MediaMVP via a suitable wall outlet for a seamless, attractive and sophisticated whole-house media solution.
"Many home builders and home electronics professionals are looking for high-margin ways to increase a home's value. There's no question that digital home networks are at the top of the list," said Ken Plotkin, Chief Executive Officer of Hauppauge Digital, Inc. "MediaMVP's simplicity of use, reliability, and cutting-edge features are second to none. Plus its price makes it cost effective for every room in the house."
MediaMVP gives homeowners the ability to enjoy virtually any kind of audio or video entertainment stored on a PC, anywhere in the house. From the comfort of a living room sofa, for example, users can play MP3 music collections, listen to Internet radio stations, enjoy JPEG slideshows -- with or without music -- and even watch PC-based movies that are located on a PC in a different part of the house.
MediaMVP can also be hidden behind access panels in walls and ceilings and attached to audio amplifiers or video monitors. Music, videos or digital pictures can be sent from a central PC individually to each MediaMVP, providing a whole house audio/video system.
MediaMVP is the ultimate media enabler for home theater systems, plasma screens, and whole-house audio systems. The device supports all common multimedia formats including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX, MP3, WMA (Windows Media Audio), JPEG and GIF, and connects to monitors and TVs through Composite or S-Video and stereo audio connections.
For easy navigation, MediaMVP includes a remote control that allows users to pause, fast forward, and rewind through videos as well as pause music and picture shows. Up to 20 rooms can be networked using MediaMVP (one MediaMVP is required per each display or audio amplifier).

SRS Labs' WOW Technology Featured in Sony's New LCD PC/TV Displays
Company's WOW Audio Technology Rapidly Becoming the Standard Solution for Display Monitors
SRS Labs, Inc. , one of the world's leading providers of advanced audio, voice and semiconductor technology solutions, announced today that Sony, one of the world's most respected electronics and entertainment brands, has expanded its use of SRS Labs' WOW(TM) audio technology to include the company's new 17- and 19-inch LCD PC/TV displays, which are expected to be available at retailers in February.
Through the incorporation of SRS WOW technology, the displays provide a powerful, high quality audio performance from the compact speakers built into the unit. WOW dramatically improves the performance of small speakers, such as those found in desktop PCs, by creating a wide and full sound stage and deep rich bass tones that extend beyond the physical placement of the speakers.
Alan Kraemer, executive vice president of technology and business development for SRS Labs said, "SRS Labs' relationship with Sony has spanned several other display and TV products. We are proud that Sony has chosen to yet again, implement WOW into this exciting new product line."
Over 300 million hardware or software products have been shipped or downloaded that include the powerful WOW audio feature. WOW is a combination of SRS 3D Stereo, FOCUS and TruBass post-processing technologies designed specifically for small speaker applications to dramatically enhance the quality of any audio material over a two-speaker system. It delivers the perception of a broadened stereo field, improved dynamics and increased bass performance over a wide range of speaker sizes.

Hitachi High-Technologies Launches First HD MPEG-2 PCI Decoder Working Up To 200Mbps
Hitachi High-Technologies is pleased to announce the launch of the world's first professional HDTV MPEG2 Decoder PCI card capable of decoding HD MPEG-2 TS streams of up to 200Mbps. No longer will you be limited to handling video streams of only 80Mbps, the MD1S60DG-PCI card will give you the extended capability of decoding HDTV DVB-ASI transport streams of up to 200Mbps in both 4:2:2 or 4:2:0 formats. The calibre of the HD-SDI stream output picture quality is outstanding and true to the broadcast industry that this card supports. Ideal applications for the card include digital cinemas and theatres enabling the delivery of film quality pictures, HD contribution and mobile HD.
Main features of the HD MPEG-2 Decoder are demonstrated by its ability to decode both 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 formats in a TS of up to 200Mbps and its flexibility to auto-sense all major HD video formats, including 1080i at 25, 29.97 and 30fps; 1080p at 23.97, 24fps and 720p at 59.94 and 60fps. Profile and Levels: MP@HL, 422P@HL and MP@H14L. Two audio channels are supported decoding MPEG-1 Layer II audio with AES-EBU outputs. In a short-PCI card profile, the main card dimension is 175mm x 107mm excluding the BNC connectors for transport stream input and audio/video output. It is also possible to drive the card in standalone mode with a PCI-bridge adaptor card.
With High Definition TV making its mark on the industry Hitachi High-Technologies is pleased to respond to the overwhelming request for an MPEG2 HD Decoder capable of decoding the HD video streams from low bit-rates of less than 15Mbps up to very high bitrates of up to 200Mbps on a PCI card. The MD1S60DG-PCI meets all these criteria and beyond with its excellent specification and will be an invaluable tool in the production of richer and more diverse HDTV programming.
TI, the third-biggest chipmaker in the world, is aggressively working with TV manufacturers, bureaucrats, producers and movie theaters to promote high-definition programming and technology, with a particular emphasis on dropping the cost of HDTV sets and building digital cinemas.
"We're working with our customers to move the price (of HDTV sets) to $1,000," Texas Instruments CEO Rich Templeton said in a meeting with reporters at the tail end of the Computer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. "This is the year of HDTV."
TI's interest in high-definition entertainment stems from its digital light processors (DLPs), a line of chips used in rear-projection TVs and projectors. In DLPs, transistors manipulate thousands of tiny mirrors to create an image that then appears on-screen (there are HD DLP TVs and DLP TVs for regular programming).
With more than 140,000 attendees from 115 countries witnessing the introduction of thousands of new products and technologies from more than 2,500 exhibitors, the 2005 International CES reinforced its position as the world's greatest technology showcase. The 2005 International CES ran in Las Vegas, Nev., January 6-9, 2005.
The show floor was packed with executives from the consumer technology, broadcasting, cable, motion picture and numerous other industries who converged in Las Vegas the last four days to hear from technology industry visionaries and view a spectacular showcase of hot new products and trends in audio, accessories, home networking, mobile electronics, video and wireless.
"The 2005 International CES succeeded by every measure," said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of the Consumer Electronics Association, the producer of the International CES. "From the international audience, major media and top buyers that came to the International CES, to the top-notch keynotes and conferences, government leaders and exhibitors showcasing the amazing breadth and depth of the CE industry, this event truly was the place to be over the past week for anyone involved in the global consumer technology industry."
The 2005 International CES set several major show records including number of attendees (142,585 - subject to independent audit), exhibitors (2,550) and exhibit space (1.531 million net square feet). International attendance also grew to more than 23,028, up from 18,000 at the 2004 CES.
The show featured a broad array of exciting product and technology introductions and announcements, many of which provide consumers with unprecedented control over when, where and how they watch movies, listen to music, view their digital photos and access other information, education and entertainment content. Showing the strength of the transition to high definition television (HDTV), the show floor not only featured the latest developments in display technologies but a variety of products and innovations that build upon HDTV, such as wired and wireless connections to stream HD video throughout the home and new HD recording devices.
The latest in digital imaging, digital audio, satellite and HD radio, plasma and LCD displays, home video production, in-vehicle entertainment, VoIP, Ulra-Wideband and more also wowed show attendees.
"The consumer technology industry is in the midst of a rapid shift to digital," noted Shapiro. "As a result, we are seeing numerous exciting product introductions. The International CES reflects this digital revolution."
"This year's show seemed to feature more new product announcements and developments than any previous show, cementing the International CES as the global launching pad for new technologies," said Karen Chupka, CEA's vice president, events and conferences. "Our exhibitors are able to leverage the tremendous media coverage and marketing opportunities that surround the show."
In addition to standing as a product showplace, the 2005 International CES included a star-studded array of industry luminaries serving as keynoters and participating in more than 350 conference sessions. The show kicked-off with a keynote from Microsoft's Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates and included keynote presentations from Intel Corporation CEO Craig Barrett; Ron Garriques, president personal devices business and executive vice president, Motorola, Inc.; Carly Fiorina, H-P chairman and CEO; and Rich Templeton, president and CEO, Texas Instruments. Dozens of industry leaders participated in conference sessions and panel discussions covering the hottest topics in the consumer technology industry.
The 2005 show also attracted more than 130 top officials from international, federal and state government bodies. The government leaders joined top executives from the technology, cable, broadcasting and motion picture industries at the show's annual Leaders in Technology dinner. The dinner featured a keynote from Mike Ramsay, co-founder, chairman and CEO of TiVo, who urged public policy-makers to avoid strangling innovation through overregulation.
The 2006 International CES will be held January 5-8, 2006 in Las Vegas, Nevada. More information will be available later this year at www.cesweb.org.

TiVo Unveils Tahiti: Next Generation Service Strategy at CES
Service to Integrate Broadcast and Broadband Content Delivery so Subscribers can Watch What They Want, Anytime, Anywhere
January 6, 2005 - CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, Las Vegas, NV – TiVo unveiled its next generation service strategy, code-named "Tahiti," once again setting the standard for the best consumer entertainment experience. With Tahiti, consumers will have an easy way to find and control content from any broadcast or broadband source. TiVo's product and service platform will offer consumers broader choice in programming and the convenience to take their favorite shows with them to enjoy anywhere they choose.
Tahiti features an open software platform which will enable third parties to develop applications and distribute content to the TiVo subscriber base. TiVo intends to roll out components of Tahiti throughout this year and into 2006.
"As with digital music, we expect to see a continued shift in the control of TV entertainment towards consumers," said Mike Ramsay, Chairman & CEO, TiVo. "This means consumers will expect the increased choice in ala carte programming that Internet-based TV will offer, fair and reasonable use of the TV they pay for, and the ability to take their shows with them on business travel or family road trips. In short, consumers tell us that they want entertainment to fit into their busy lives, not the other way around."
Tahiti will further differentiate TiVo from generic cable and satellite DVRs. The next generation TiVo® service will offer consumers unprecedented choice, bringing together music, home videos and digital photos, broadband and broadcast content on their own "Personal Entertainment Network." The elements of Tahiti build upon the award winning user experience and convenience that TiVo introduced five years ago, when it first launched DVR.
THE TAHITI SEVEN POINT PLAN
Content Delivery Service. To provide consumers even more convenience and control over their entertainment experience, TiVo is developing a new content delivery service that will enable TiVo® Series2 subscribers to search and access broadband content. In conjunction with this effort, TiVo is also developing television commerce capabilities allowing subscribers to purchase products with a push of a button on the TiVo remote control.
Entertainment Applications Platform. TiVo's position in the living room, connectivity and usability make it an attractive platform for third party innovation and services. TiVo's Entertainment Applications Platform will facilitate the development of innovative new services in the living room. These services could range from music services to network promotions to on-line video stores and more.
TiVo HD Digital Cable Ready DVR. This box will fully integrate an HD digital cable receiver and TiVo DVR in a single set top box. CableCARD technology will be built-in, giving consumers access to digital cable programming and other features of the TiVo service. With TiVo's new digital ready DVR and access to broadband content, consumers will have more choice, including ala carte programming options via the Internet versus paying for premium bundled packages from cable providers. The TiVo HD Digital Cable ready DVR is expected to be available in early 2006.
Portability. With the TiVo service, consumers can watch what they want, when they want, and, now, where they want. The Humax and Toshiba DVD recorders with TiVo service let consumers record their favorite shows and then easily burn them to DVD for playback anywhere they have a DVD player. With TiVoToGo , consumers can securely transfer their favorite shows from a TiVo box to a laptop or portable media player in their home so that they can take their favorite shows with them on business travel or family road trips. More information is available at www.tivo.com/togo. Alternately, they can use the DVD recorder they may already have on their PC to save a show to DVD. The TiVoToGo service enhancement is available now as a service update and is included in the TiVo service at no additional charge.
PC and Online Integration. TiVo desktop software 2.0 allows consumers to integrate music, photos and video into their TiVo experience. Online Scheduling lets subscribers schedule a recording on their TiVo box from anywhere they have internet access. This will be extended to make it easy to record broadband content as well.
Personalization. Exclusive TiVo personalization features like WishList searches and Season Pass recordings will be extended for broadband use, helping subscribers personalize their searches to find their favorite broadband content.
TiVo Series2 box. Is the only combination broadcast and broadband platform which easily connects to your home network to bring together all your entertainment: personal content, such as music and photos, your favorite television programs and later this year, with TiVo’s content delivery service, broadband content as well.
TAHITI INDUSTRY PARTNERS
Industry partnerships will be instrumental in the execution of the Tahiti Strategy. They include:
Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT):
Microsoft's Chairman, Bill Gates, in his CES keynote address announced an alliance with TiVo and demonstrated how TiVoToGo integrates with Microsoft's mobility strategy. TiVo Series2 subscribers can transfer their recorded television to a Windows XP-based PC for easy transfer and playback on Windows Mobile devices, including Portable Media Centers, Pocket PCs and Smartphones.
Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC)
Sonic Solutions’software package includes its MyDVD Studio 6.1 and CinePlayer software that work with TiVoToGo to enable burning programs to a DVD and replaying them on any device. The Sonic Solutions software package is expected to retail for less than $50 and will be available to TiVo subscribers next month.
AMD (NYSE:AMD)
AMD, a leading semiconductor company, also announced plans to integrate TiVoToGo functionality in its reference design for portable media devices.
"The seven components of Tahiti, combined with the collective strength of our partners will culminate in the delivery of the next generation TiVo service. The integration of broadband and broadcast content in the TiVo platform, will deliver the ultimate entertainment experience that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere," said Ramsay.

TiVo Developing High-Definition, Digital Cable Ready DVR
TiVo® DVR with CableCARD Will Offer Flexible, Fully Featured Platform for Accessing HD Broadcast and Broadband Content
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW, Las Vegas, NV – TiVo today will demonstrate a high definition, digital cable ready DVR that will enable TiVo subscribers to access the growing number of high definition broadcasts available over the air or through their cable provider without a separate set-top box. The DVR will support CableCARD technology, enabling consumers to access their favorite premium and HD cable channels with the ease of use and powerful search capabilities of the TiVo® service. Moreover, as part of the "Tahiti" strategy announced at CES today, the new DVR will also allow consumers to access, download, and manage broadband content.
"We believe that the deployment of CableCARD technology is an essential development for the future of digital television. By eliminating the need for a separate set top box, consumers will enjoy more choice and flexibility over their entertainment delivery," said Mike Ramsay, chairman and chief executive officer, TiVo. "TiVo will play a key role in driving this technology forward to bring it to the masses."
TiVo's HD CableCARD DVR will be a premium product marketed toward consumers that want the very best in home entertainment. Consumers will be able to record their favorite entertainment from many different sources – high-definition channels, premium cable channels, and video content available via broadband.
CableCARDs free consumers from needing a cable set top box and offer consumers choice in how they get their digital entertainment. By providing consumer choice, companies like TiVo can provide an alternative to the traditional cable set top box and offer innovative services and content that address the consumer's personal interests.
The new HD CableCARD DVR is in development and TiVo plans to launch the product early next year.

Continuous In-booth game competitions boost concept of Gaming Theaters at Atlantic Technology Booth 21744 in South Hall 1.
LAS
VEGAS -- Atlantic Technology, America's oldest manufacturer of dedicated
home theater loudspeaker systems, has teamed up with The Cinema Design
Group, a respected systems integrator based in Garland, Texas, to demonstrate
the remarkable potential of a high end gaming theater at the Consumer
Electronics Show opening here today.
"Just as multichannel home theater systems changed the way we enjoy movies at home, they can also dramatically improve the video game experience," said Atlantic Technology CEO, Peter Tribeman. "Modern video games are routinely encoded with multichannel audio soundtracks that put the player in the middle of the action and provide audible cues to improve game play."
Throughout the show, dealers, reps, journalists, and other attendees will be able to test their virtual courage and computer street racing skills in four-player competitions using the game Need for Speed Underground 2 by Electronic Arts. Each day's top scorer will win a pair of Atlantic's new outdoor speaker, and all contestants will be entered in a raffle to win a 5.1-channel Atlantic Technology speaker system and X-Box gaming system.
The Cinema Design Group has created a living-room-in-a-booth environment to show dealers the potential of gaming theaters, or combining home theater and gaming. It was designed around Atlantic Technology’s newly introduced THX Select certified System 4200e speaker system, with the company’s P2000 AV Controller and A2000 7-channel power amplifier handing amplification and processing. A Vidikron video projector, Microsoft X-Box gaming system, and four custom-designed CDG Type C gaming chairs round out the system.
From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes in complete high-performance multi-channel speaker systems, state-of-the-art home theater electronics components, and products for custom audio/video installation. Atlantic's New System 4200e – Now, Easier and Better
Atlantic's
New System 4200e – Now, Easier and Better
Atlantic Technology has introduced its System
4200e THX Select home theater speaker ensemble, an improved version
of its critically acclaimed* System 4200 THX Select system. The
4200e front-and center-channel speakers have been redesigned by
replacing the original user-installed cosmetic side panels with
permanently attached finishing panels. In addition, the new system's
642e subwoofer has a new, more massive 12-inch woofer and an improved
cabinet.
642e
SB subwoofer
Like its predecessor, System 4200e provides the
home theater enthusiast with premium THX Select certified performance
in a moderately priced product that looks and sounds like a far
more expensive system. Based on Atlantic Technology's CORE (Custom
Optimized, Room Enhanced) design philosophy, System 4200e has timbre
characteristics that are amazingly similar to the company's more
exotic, top-of-the-line (in the $25,000 range) System 8200 THX
Ultra2 package.
For both dealers and consumers, the use of permanently
attached side panels turns out to be much easier and more practical
than using add-on panels. Since the newly redesigned front and
center cabinets have slightly greater interior volume than before,
there is also a nominal improvement in their bass response. Finish
options remain the same: Gloss Black, Satin Black, Maple, or Silver.
642e
SB 12-inch driver
The most important performance upgrade, however,
is to the 642e SB subwoofer. It uses a brand new 12-inch woofer,
with a three-times heavier magnet and new cone design with a lower
resonant frequency. This results in an improved output over the
two lowest octaves, and a significant reduction in harmonic distortion
levels.
In addition to its new woofer, the 642e SB subwoofer
features a powerful 300-watt internal amplifier which drives the
system to produce high bass levels from 25 Hz to 300 Hz (+/- 3
dB). It also incorporates Atlantic's exclusive Clear Filter Technology™,
which eliminates the deleterious effects that the subwoofer's enclosure
itself can have on the sound.
The Atlantic Technology 4200e LR front speakers
use two 5.25-inch GLH (Graphite Loaded Homopolymer) woofers mounted
one-each above and below a single 1-inch silk dome tweeter. This
vertical MTM configuration provides a wide, highly linear horizontal
dispersion, while limiting vertical dispersion to reduce unwanted
reflections from the floor or ceiling. The 4200e C includes the
same drivers oriented horizontally, but with the woofers side-by-side
and the tweeter above and between the woofers. Since the effective
acoustic distance between the woofers is so small, any theoretical
horizontal dispersion limitations of this configuration are essentially
irrelevant. The 4200e C also features Atlantic's exclusive tilting
base design, to aim the speaker directly at the listeners for optimum
dialogue reproduction.
All three front speakers include controls that
can adapt sound quality for different speaker placements. A three-position
High Frequency Energy switch adjusts for rooms that are acoustically
too bright or too dull. A Boundary Compensation toggle can be used
to adjust the lower-midrange output to compensate for the sound
colorations caused by placing a speaker close to a TV screen, or
building it into a cabinet or shelving unit.
The 4200e SR dipole/bipole surround speakers
use one woofer and tweeter system angled toward the front of the
room, and another identical system angled toward the rear. A front-panel
switch allows the pair to operate either out of phase in a dipole
mode, or in-phase as a bipole speaker.
The Atlantic Technology System 4200e speakers
will be available in January. Suggested retail prices are: 4200e
LR, $930/pair; 4200e C, $550 each; 4200e SR, $900/pair; and 642e
SB, $920 each. The combined price for a 5.1-channel system is $3500.00.
From its inception in 1989, Atlantic Technology's
mission has been to produce home entertainment products that exemplify
the very best in both performance and value. The company specializes

Blaupunkt All-In-One DVD Player/Monitor Just 1.5-Inches Deep
Blaupunkt IVOD-1022 features unique motor-loading DVD player incorporated in rear of 10.2-inch widescreen LCD display for clean, simple installation
Blaupunkt has introduced the IVOD-1022, an extremely low profile all-in-one DVD player and 10.2-inch video monitor for overhead mounting to the cockpit roof. Thanks to its advanced display and innovative DVD loading mechanism, the unit features a remarkable housing depth of just 1.5-inches (38 mm) when not in use.
"The IVOD-1022 is the shallowest all-in-one overhead unit we are aware of," comments Blaupunkt Video Systems Senior Product Manager Andrew Cho. "By incorporating a motorized, slot-loading transport directly in the rear of the display housing, we were able to save over an inch of depth compared to conventional designs. This unit delivers complete entertainment for rear seat passengers with essentially no loss in usable space in the interior."
The IVOD-1022 DVD transport is capable of playing DVD, CD, and even MP3 encoded CD-R/RW discs. The integrated LCD display is driven by a short-run S-Video connection for improved reproduction quality. The unit includes a built-in 12-channel FM transmitter to allow for simple integration with existing audio equipment, and a wide-angle (+/- 80 degrees) IR transmitter for use with a personal wireless headset.
Like all monitors in the Blaupunkt video line, the IVOD-1022 uses a superior quality active matrix TFT LCD display that is guaranteed for 15,000 hours of use. The monitor has a resolution of 800 x 400 pixels, and provides a wide viewable angle of 120 degrees horizontal and 90 degrees vertical.
The IVOD-1022 features simplified connectivity and integration options for easy installation and use in nearly any vehicle. For the simplest standalone installations, the built-in FM transmitter or IR headphones can be used for audio reproduction, and the only physical connections required are 12V power, ground, and a control signal for the integrated dome light. There are also physical A/V input and outputs for cases where a physical connection is desired, and all wired connections are included in a signle 20-pin DIN cable. There is an additional set of A/V inputs on the chassis itself for temporary use with equipment such as a personal MP3 player or videogame console.

Canton Expands Its Flagship Karat Reference Loudspeaker Series with Remarkable 3-1/2 way Center Channel Model
Karat Reference
2 DC Center is the best center channel loudspeaker the company
has ever offered.
Canton
Karat Reference 2 DC Center
Shown with optional LS 2 stand
Canton, Germany's largest and best selling loudspeaker brand,
has introduced the Karat Reference 2 DC Center channel speaker,
bringing the high quality and edge-of-the-envelope performance
of its Karat Reference line into the realm of home theater and
multi-channel music. For Canton, the Karat Reference line reflects
an uncompromising commitment to quality and engineering, and
a philosophy that all products can benefit from a process of
continuous improvement.
Canton's Karat Reference 2 DC Center is a full-range center
channel speaker that employs the same driver complement and enclosure
engineering used in the company's critically lauded Karat Reference
2 DC floor-standing speaker. These driver and cabinet advances
are integrated using the company's most sophisticated crossover
network to date. This high level of engineering is complemented
by the exceptional craftsmanship and visual design for which
Canton has long been famous. The result is a loudspeaker designed
to appeal the most discriminating audiophiles and home theater
enthusiasts.
“This is the company's ultimate center channel speaker,” said
Canton USA president, Paul Madsen. “Canton’s engineering
team took the challenge of replicating the remarkable performance
of the Reference 2 DC tower in a center channel speaker. The
result is a speaker that will go toe to toe with nearly any loudspeaker
in the world, center channel or otherwise.”
The Canton Karat Reference 2 DC Center has an unusual trapezoidal
cabinet made from multiple-density laminate that is 1-1/4 inches
thick that consists of a layer of high-density particleboard
laminated to a layer of lower-density board. This combination
is not only stronger than other speakers, but is also much more
acoustically inert. The heavily braced cabinet is divided into
five sonically isolated chambers, and has absolutely no parallel
internal surfaces that could create standing waves. The shape
also provides relatively large cabinet volume for excellent bass,
while presenting a low-height front panel that minimizes diffraction
and is more visually appealing than taller designs.
This loudspeaker system’s transducers, like stock car
engines rebuilt for racing, are proven Canton drivers that have
been reengineered with more powerful magnets, improved diaphragms,
higher-tolerance gap geometry, added shielding, and better venting.
The sophisticated 3-1/2-way crossover network, which uses large
hand-wound coils and expensive ICW capacitors, is mechanically
and acoustically isolated from the rest of the speaker in order
to prevent microphonic distortions. The crossover also incorporates
the latest evolution of Canton’s exclusive Displacement
Control (DC) technology for higher bass levels and remarkably
low levels of bass distortion.
One of the greatest challenges in developing the Karat Reference
2 Center was the adaptation of the mid/tweeter arrangement to
a horizontal configuration. Conventional horizontal MTM designs
suffer from dispersion irregularities caused by adverse cancellations
between the drivers in the midrange frequencies. In order to
negate these interactions, Canton engineers adapted the crossover
network to a 3-1/2 way design, with one of the two midrange drivers
reproducing the upper bass range from 150 Hz to 450 Hz while
the other goes from 150 Hz to 3,200 Hz. The horizontal dispersion
is improved because the shorter wavelengths are now only produced
by a single driver. There is also some improvement in upper bass
output.
One of the key design goals for the Karat Reference 2 DC Center
was to maintain the exceptional bass performance that the Reference
series is known for, both in terms of high output levels and
extended low frequency range and accuracy. This is accomplished
through optimal integration of the acoustic suspension enclosure
with the woofer and crossover, plus the careful application of
Canton’s proven Displacement Control high-pass filtering
technology, which extends the low frequency response by one-half
octave. DC technology prevents the top-mounted 12-inch woofer
from responding to signals that are below the natural resonance
frequency of the system. When conventional speakers without DC
attempt to reproduce such signals, they absorb excessive amounts
of power in attempting to create extreme excursions that produce
little audible output. The result of this would be very high
levels of bass harmonic distortion as well as lower efficiency
and power handling capabilities. Consequently, DC technology
lowers bass distortion and channels the energy where it can be
used to improve the low-frequency extension of the system.
The Reference Center features a highly 'tuned' version of Canton's
proven 1-inch dome tweeter, which features a dome and voice-coil
former fashioned from a single piece of aluminum-manganese alloy.
When compared with conventional two-piece glued domes and formers,
the Canton tweeter provides a much more direct coupling between
the voice coil and the diaphragm. It also allows the dome to
act as a radiator to cool the coils at high power levels. In
the Reference 2 Center, this classic Canton tweeter was modified
with a high energy neodymium ring magnet, added magnetic shielding
to better contain the higher magnetic flux levels, and improved
internal venting to prevent compression effects which can impinge
on dynamic response.
The Reference 2 Center's 7-inch aluminum mid/bass and midrange
drivers each feature an unusual concave dustcap that helps to
maintain greater linearity and better dispersion characteristics
across a broad frequency range. The dustcaps are formed from
the same material as the cones themselves, providing for multiple
resonance paths to prevent the formation of clearly defined standing
waves across the face of the driver. Other enhancements in the
Reference series drivers include a redesigned double-ferrite
shielded magnet system, and a sinusoidally-shaped injected rubber
surround for improved linearity, frequency response, and power
handling characteristics.
The Karat Reference 2 Center’s powerful 12-inch woofer
has tremendous power handling characteristics thanks to its enhanced
double-ferrite shielded magnet system, a low-mass cellulite-graphite
diaphragm, sinusoidal surround, improved suspension, and a heavy
duty cast magnesium frame. These are all proprietary drivers
designed and manufactured exclusively by Canton.
The Canton Karat Reference 2 DC Center is finished in a stunning
silver lacquer with a black fabric cover. It will be available
in January with a suggested retail price of $5,000 each.

Canton's New Vento Loudspeakers Combine German Engineering with Italianate Curves
Canton's
New Vento Loudspeakers Combine German Engineering with Italianate
Curves
Canton
Vento 809 DC more photos below
Canton, Germany's leading manufacturer of high-performance
loudspeakers, has introduced a line of high-end music and home
theater speakers called Vento. Named after the Italian word for
'wind,' this four-model line features gracefully curving cabinetry
reminiscent of a fine violin. Unlike a violin, however, there
is nothing delicate about the rugged, pressure-laminated monocoque
construction, which provides superior stiffness and sonic neutrality
compared to flat sided speakers. This new cabinet design, coupled
with significant improvements to the transducers and crossover
network, results in a line of speakers with higher output levels,
extended treble response, more bass, and significantly lower
distortion levels than competing products.
Using a technique is similar to that used to manufacture
high-end pianos, the Vento line's curved panels are made from
a thick, six-layer laminate of wood and wood fiber composites
molded one layer at a time under very high pressure. This creates
an incredibly stiff and sonically neutral enclosure. The outer
layer is finished with either cherry wood or silver lacquer.
"The Vento line represents a new evolutionary
branch on the Canton family tree," said the company's chief
designer, Frank Göbl, "Like all our speakers, appearance
follows function, with the inherently greater stiffness of the
curved, monocoque structure acting to reduce panel resonances
and eliminate internal parallel surfaces. It also provides for
a relatively high internal volume while maintaining a narrow
front baffle, and a very elegant and unobtrusive appearance."
Canton
Vento 805 CM
(pictured with optional LS 800 stand)
The Vento line consists of four models: Vento
809 DC, a large full-range three-way floor-standing speaker system;
Vento 807 DC, a smaller full-range three-way floor-standing speaker
systems; Vento 802, a compact two-way pedestal speaker; and Vento
805 CM, a 2-1/2-way center channel speaker. All four models are
bass-reflex designs with front ports on the floor-standing models,
and rear ports on the others. The two floor-standing speakers
use Canton's proprietary Distortion Control circuitry for exceptionally
clean bass response. These two also use an isolation base system
that was developed for Karat Reference to prevent vibrations
from traveling into the floor.
In spite of its new appearance, Vento is unmistakable
as the product of Canton's three-decade history of continuous
improvement in all areas of research, development, engineering,
design, and manufacturing. In Vento, Canton has made several
significant improvements in its drivers and crossover design
that help this speaker to set new standards for sound quality
and performance.
All loudspeakers consist of a combination of
parts that must function as a complete system, and no single
part functions in isolation. Since Canton designs and builds
all of its own drivers, cabinets, and crossovers, the company
has much greater control over every part of they system than
most other brands. The company's extensive computer-aided research,
development, and manufacturing systems are used to optimize each
component part with the goal of optimal total system performance.
One of the key elements in these speakers'
natural sound reproduction is their use of the newest variant
of company's ADT-25 one-inch aluminum-manganese dome tweeter.
This powerful driver varies from earlier versions with a new
flared front plane which acts to improve high frequency dispersion,
off-axis linearity and to boost efficiency by 2- to 3-dB. The
driver also uses a new surround design that allows the system
to operate at higher frequencies without break-up or distortion.
Like earlier tweeters, the Vento's uses Canton's signature one-piece
aluminum-manganese tweeter dome and voice-coil former. By combining
the dome and former in one piece instead of two, this tweeter
provides superior high frequency performance and allows the dome
to function as a heat sink for the voice coils.
The 7-inch driver, which is used as the midrange
on the Vento 809 DC and as both a midrange and bass driver on
the others, has an aluminum cone with a concave dust cap, and
a powerful magnetic system. The wave system (cone, dust cap,
and surround) is modeled on that used in the Karat Reference
line but with a new cone shape, improved spider, and a totally
new sinusoidal surround. These changes, plus refinements in the
magnetic system result in a 30- to 40-percent improvement in
excursion range and increases output by 3 dB.
The two 8-inch woofers used on the Vento 809
DC are Canton's largest aluminum cone drivers. They have new
sinusoidal surrounds, improved speaker coils, and new double-ferrite
motor for improved excursion linearity, higher output levels
and low distortion. The bass performance of the Vento 809 DC
and Vento 807 DC are further enhanced by the use of Canton's
signature Displacement Control technology, which eliminates unwanted
excursions below the normal operating frequency of the speaker,
and especially infrasonic oscillations. DC technology also provides
a strong boost in low-end response, and dramatically reduces
harmonic distortion.
The Vento 802 is a two-way bass-reflex design
with a rear port. It is ideal for pedestal mounting in a compact
stereo system, or as a surround speaker in a home theater. The
Vento 805 CM center channel speaker is a 2-1/2-way bass-reflex
design with a rear port, and it has been optimized for horizontal
mounting. The driver magnets have computer-optimized magnetic
shielding. A curved base allows the speaker to be tilted up or
down to suit acoustics.
These new loudspeakers will be available from
Canton dealers in January with suggested retail prices of $5,000
per pair for the Vento 809 DC; $3,500 per pair for the Vento
807 DC; $2,000 per pair for the Vento 802; and $1,500 each for
the Vento 805 CM. They are each available in cherry wood veneer
or silver lacquer finishes.
Canton is the largest manufacturer and best-selling
brand of loudspeakers in Germany. It was founded in 1973 by a
group of audio enthusiasts who defined their mission "to
always develop the finest loudspeakers in their class." For

Wireworld has introduced the world’s
highest fidelity HDMI/DVI digital audio-video cable. Wireworld Silver
Starlight 52, or "five squared," maintains a greater
degree of signal integrity and covers longer distances – over 100
feet – than any other HDMI and DVI cable.
"Silver Starlight 52 is radically different from all
previous HDMI and DVI cables” said David Salz, Wireworld's president
and designer. "We were determined to take digital cable performance
to a distinctly higher level, and while it was a tough climb, we succeeded."
One example of the lengths Salz went to is evident in the design of
the cable’s internal shields. The conductor shields in conventional
HDMI and DVI cables consist of metallized Mylar tape and a drain wire,
which perform well for their reasonable cost and small size. However,
their performance of is far from that of the ideal shield, a solid copper
tube. With this ideal in mind, Salz developed a compact, dense and flexible
shield made of silver-clad copper, which provides nearly ideal shielding
and conductivity, without introducing additional bulk or excessive cost.
These unique shields are an element of Wireworld’s newly developed
Wavesquare 2™ Digital Jitter Reduction Technology, which utilizes
superior materials in a proprietary cable configuration to increase bandwidth,
while minimizing signal loss, impedance variations, conductor length
differentials, cross-talk and noise. The cable's unique flat profile,
which is only .16" thick and .71" wide, provides superior flexibility
and widens the range of installation options. The signal conductors consist
of silver-clad copper of 6N (>99.9999%) purity, which is produced
through the OCC (Ohno Continuous Casting) process utilizing Wireworld's
proprietary Grain Optimization technique.
The anodized aluminum connector provides high durability and superior
shielding. It also houses the proprietary Wavesquare 2™ cable terminations,
which maintain the cable's precise 100-ohm impedance all the way to the
plug contacts. These contacts are unique in that they are clad with a
thick layer of silver, rather than the standard nickel, under their gold
plating. This reduces the contact loss by more than half. Wavesquare
2™ Digital Jitter Reduction Technology provides Silver Starlight
52 with wider bandwidth, lower loss, lower noise, lower timing
differential, less cross-talk, and greater impedance accuracy than any
previous HDMI or DVI cable.
Wireworld Silver Starlight 52 cables are UL-CL3 and CSA-FT4
rated for in-wall installation. They will be shipping early February
and pricing will be announced at CES.
Wireworld, which was founded by Salz in 1992, offers a broad spectrum
of very high quality full-range and bi-wire loudspeaker cables, audio
and video interconnects, digital audio interconnects, power cords, and
digital A/V cables. The company has an excellent reputation among audio
and home theater enthusiasts for producing high quality cables based
on the use of objective perceptual testing, patented designs, premium
materials, and exceptional manufacturing quality.
Wireworld Debuts the World's Fastest Speaker Cables
Wireworld has introduced Insta-Wire™, the world's fastest system
for creating custom, audiophile-quality speaker cables at home or on
the job-site. Just insert Wireworld's proprietary Horizon 52 flat
speaker wire into the Insta-Wire connector and squeeze to create premium
speaker cables without the need for wire-strippers or crimping tools.
These premium banana-plug and spade-lug connectors are made from oxygen-free
copper, clad in a thick layer of highly conductive silver, and then gold
plated to prevent oxidation. The finished cables carry Underwriter's
UL-CL3 rating and Canada's CSA-FT4 rating for in-wall use.
"We've taken a surprisingly time-consuming task, and turned it
into instant gratification," said David Salz, Wireworld's president
and chief designer. "For custom installers, this will allow them
to provide their customers with a very-high-quality cable in a fraction
of the time it takes to terminate twisted-pair speaker wire or even zip
cord. It's so easy you can do it blindfolded. We've been working on this
for a long time, but it was only when we figured out how to achieve this
convenience without compromising our tradition of providing objectively
superior sound quality, that we began producing the cable. The cable
can also be stripped and terminated easily with conventional tools and
connectors."
The flat, Horizon 52 two-conductor oxygen-free-copper insulated
cable is just over 1/8th inch thick and less than 3/8ths of an inch wide,
and its shape is asymmetric to prevent polarity errors. The cross-sectional
area of the conductor is equivalent to a conventional 14-gauge round
conductor. The conductors are insulated in polyethylene to reduce capacitance
and dielectric absorption for cleaner high frequencies, while maintaining
fidelity. The proprietary conductor design provides uniform series impedance
for superior fidelity, even over long runs. Developed through objective
perceptual testing, this design minimizes inductive losses to produce
dramatic improvements in clarity, dynamics and spatial effects.
The highly intuitive Insta-Wire connectors use a proprietary design
that makes it easy to create very-high-quality banana-plug or spade-lug
terminations. Once the wire is inserted into the opening, the sides of
the connector are squeezed, driving eight silver-clad and gold-plated
oxygen-free copper blades through the insulation to create two high-pressure
crimp connections on each of the two conductors.
Since the Horizon 52 asymmetrical shape of the cross-section
of the cable and shape of the opening are identical, it is impossible
to connect the wires backwards. It also allows connectors to be easily
assembled totally by feel in awkward locations and with complete confidence
of doing the job right.
The Wireworld Insta-Wire connectors are available in with either banana
plugs or spade-lug connections. Insta-Wire and Horizon 52 will
be shipping early February and pricing will be announced at CES.

TiVo Partners With Microsoft, Sonic, and AMD to Offer Solutions That Extend the TiVoToGo(TM) Experience
TiVo Partnerships Enable Portability of Entertainment That Can't Be Found on Generic DVRs
TiVo said today that it is collaborating with leaders in technology to extend the innovative TiVoToGo ( TiVo To Go ) service enhancement to enable portability to multiple devices. The company began rolling out the TiVoToGo service enhancement to subscribers this week and will work with Microsoft , Sonic, and AMD respectively, to enable consumers to take their entertainment with them wherever they go, to watch whenever they want.
"Now that millions of consumers are enjoying the TiVo service in their living rooms, we found that many of them had a desire to take that entertainment experience with them. By rallying other industry leaders around this opportunity, we can bring consumers that extended TiVo experience to a broad range of devices in a quick and powerful way," said Matt Wisk, chief marketing officer, TiVo.
Microsoft Chairman and Founder Bill Gates announced during his keynote address tonight at the Consumer Electronics Show that the two companies have embarked on a collaborative effort designed to allow consumers to take digital entertainment with them on portable devices.
Gates demonstrated how television programs stored on a TiVo® box can be transferred to a Windows XP PC for playback on Windows Mobile devices, including Portable Media Centers, and media-capable Pocket PCs and Smart phones.
"TiVoToGo is going to be an important element in our efforts to help consumers get content from the TiVo box to a growing number of Windows Mobile-based devices that make portable digital entertainment a reality," said Todd Warren, Corporate VP of Microsoft's Devices, Services and Experience Division.
Sonic Solutions has also introduced the latest version of its MyDVD Studio line (version 6.1), a comprehensive suite of software that enables users to record TiVo programming to DVD for playback on any of the millions of DVD players and DVD-equipped PCs worldwide. Starting mid-January, a MyDVD Studio 6.1 free 15-day trial and complete product software download will be available to TiVo subscribers on www.tivo.com/togo. The complete product software download will be offered to TiVo subscribers at a discounted rate of $49.99 ($20 off MSRP).
"Sonic is extremely pleased to collaborate with TiVo, the leading innovator in the DVR space, to make the TiVo experience portable," said Mark Ely, senior vice-president of strategic planning at Sonic Solutions. "With Sonic MyDVD Studio 6 and TiVoToGo, users can transfer their favorite programs over a home network and burn them onto DVDs that can be watched on TVs and DVD-equipped PCs anywhere they chose."
TiVo also announced that leading processor developer AMD has released a new embedded multimedia solution, the AMD Alchemy(TM) Au1200(TM) processor, that enables the transfer of programming from TiVo boxes to portable devices built on that platform.

This information is coming directly from Bill Gate's Keynote with Conan. I'll be getting more info on this later. But it loosk like TiVo DVR owners can download some free software that will let them send recorded shows to PCs and Portable Media Center devices. More details on this later.
With the announcement of the 500GB hard drive from Hitachi, it shouldn't be too long until we see DVRs and PVRs like TiVo, ReplayTV and the Motorola Single/Dual-Tuner DVR High-Definition Set-Top offering 500 hour units.
Hitachi, the world's No. 2 maker of hard drives, is looking to propel its 3.5-in. line of drives commonly used to store desktop computer files into new markets for storing massive quantities of data captured by personal video recorders. But instead of the 40 hours of video, on average, that a standard 80GB hard drive might store in a Tivo-type digital video recorder, the new drives can hold 200 hours -- a half-terabyte, or more than 500GB of data. via ComputerWorld
The article talks about 200 hours of video, but unless I'm wrong it seems like TiVo DVRs can fit 1hr of video on 1GB of space. So the 200 hour number in the article above should be more like 500 hours.
For all you TV lovers, you'd have over 20 days of continious TV before you'd get through all your recordings.
HP Unveils Next Phase of its Digital Entertainment Strategy
Company Announces Industry's First HDTV Media Hub, Next-Generation
HP Digital Entertainment Centers, and a Full Line of New TVs and Projectors
In advance of the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, HP
today kicked off the next phase of its digital entertainment push by
announcing a set of products and partnerships that build on the company's
strategy to deliver simplicity, innovation, personalization and mass-market
pricing.
"Digital entertainment is about enabling consumers to enjoy, manage
and interact with all kinds of content from any source in a simple, easy
way," said Carly Fiorina, HP chairman and chief executive officer. "Our
expertise in imaging and printing, consumer devices and computing technologies
combined with our R&D capabilities uniquely position HP to solve
the complexity of integrating the physical and digital worlds and take
the digital lifestyle mainstream."
The company announced an expanded family of entertainment hubs. First,
HP announced it will add high-definition ATSC tuning capabilities to
its current HP Digital Entertainment Center (DEC), which is designed
for PC enthusiasts who want to combine e-mail and Internet access with
digital entertainment capabilities. HP's new DEC products fuse the best
of PC and audio-visual elements. Two models are expected to ship this
spring with different storage, graphics card and tuning options.
Second, HP announced the industry's first HDTV media hub
an HP-developed
product that enables consumers to access, manage and enjoy digital photos,
music, TV and video combined with the capabilities of HDTV, a digital
cable set-top box and a dual-tuner digital video recorder (DVR). Consumers
who are looking for a family room or living room-based entertainment
experience can now enjoy multiple kinds of content, which previously
required multiple technologies and devices, through a single, simple-to-use
platform managed remotely from the couch. For example, consumers can
easily create their own slide shows combining personal digital photos
and videos with music.
The new HP media hub, expected for release in fall 2005, will launch
with three key services:
An intuitive Electronic Programming Guide designed by HP that allows
consumers to easily find and record the content they want,
A music information service that automatically provides song titles,
CD artwork and other artist information and
An automatic update service that upgrades the device with new services
as they become available, extending the longevity of the device.
Additionally, in 2005, HP plans to introduce a full line of 17 new HDTVs
and home theater projectors based on HP-developed "visual fidelity" technologies,
such as the company's patent-pending "wobulation" technology, which enables
twice the resolution of digital projection displays without increasing
the cost. HP's picture-enhancing technologies also analyze each pixel
in every image for noise reduction, color enhancement, motion compensation
and detail enhancement, resulting in a sharper, clearer picture.
Partnerships and channel expansion accelerate digital entertainment
HP continues to expand its partnerships with some of the industry's most
influential companies, driving open standards and furthering the goal
of providing consumers with unique content and services. New partnerships
include:
Tweeter Home Entertainment Group: HP is expanding its vast retail
presence by teaming up with specialty A/V retailer Tweeter Home Entertainment
Group. Tweeter's new Las Vegas concept store, called Tweeter Entertainment
Architects, will feature HP's digital entertainment products at the center
of many of the entertainment experience settings throughout the store.
Additionally, these products will also be sold throughout the retailer's
store network.
Philips: HP is helping to lead the digital rights management (DRM)
effort to enable businesses and consumers to produce and use digital
entertainment content without having to worry about piracy. HP and Philips
are jointly launching the new Video Content Protection System (VCPS),
which provides a powerful entertainment experience that automatically
adheres to new recording rules for the consumer but remains completely
transparent to the viewer.
Panasonic: HP and Panasonic are working together to make it easier
for consumers to use DVD media between their digital consumer electronics
and PCs by incorporating DVD+R and DVD-RAM formats into the companies'
respective DVD products. By eliminating format issues and confusion about
which media to use, both companies expect that consumer interest in DVD
recording will grow significantly. The companies also plan to cooperate
on developing products and solutions that support the Blu-ray Disc Association
high-definition optical disc format. The goal is to create the overall
best user experience in the growing recordable DVD market, as well as
in the future Blu-ray Disc market.
DRM Coral Consortium: As a founding member of the Coral Consortium,
an alliance of media and technology leaders dedicated to DRM interoperability,
HP will participate in announcements regarding new Coral members and
technical specifications. Working with the Coral Consortium is one of
HP's efforts to protect digital content without confining the consumer
experience, supporting DRM solutions that balance technology, regulations
and legal mechanisms.
Additional new products
LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling: Last year at CES, HP announced
that it was revolutionizing consumers' ability to personalize discs with
the introduction of LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology, which
enables users to create customized, silkscreen-quality labels directly
onto discs using their HP PCs. This year, HP is enhancing LightScribe
so that it works 50 percent faster. It is also licensing the technology
so it can be offered by other PC makers as well as DVD manufacturers.
Several manufacturers are announcing plans at CES 2005 to include LightScribe
technology in their products.
New Desktop and Notebook PCs: The Compaq Presario SR1350NX Desktop
PC, HP Pavilion Desktop PC (a830n or a820n) and the HP Media Center m1280n/m1270n
Photosmart PC will all include new LightScribe Direct Disc Labeling technology
and ship this month. Starting at estimated U.S. street prices of $699,
the HP Pavilion ze2000 notebook PC and the Compaq Presario M2000 notebook
PC will also ship this winter.(1)
The company will also unveil new partnerships with music, fashion and
entertainment icons during Fiorina's Friday morning keynote address at
the CES conference.
More information regarding HP's presence at 2005 International CES is
available in an online press kit at www.hp.com/go/ces2005.
About HP
HP is a technology solutions provider to consumers, businesses and institutions
globally. The company's offerings span IT infrastructure, global services,
business and home computing, and imaging and printing. For the four fiscal
quarters ended Oct. 31, 2004, HP revenue totaled $79.9 billion. More

SIRIUS plans to offer a video service in the second half of 2006, and expects to devote 2-3 channels of premium video content designed primarily for children. With the explosive growth of DVD sales, video capabilities in automobiles are quickly becoming a prime feature for families and travelers. Dolby Laboratories Showcases Advanced Technologies for High-Quality Entertainment at 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show
Dolby Laboratories today announced it will be demonstrating innovative entertainment technologies at the 2005 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), to be held January 6-9, 2005, in Las Vegas. To underscore Dolby's focus on advancing entertainment through innovation, the Dolby exhibit will feature a new booth layout that illustrates how Dolby(R) technologies impact the entertainment experience in real-life environments such as the living room, game room, media room, and in the car. Dolby's key focus for the show is Dolby Digital Plus, a technology which represents a substantial enhancement to audio delivery in broadcast and packaged media formats.
"Dolby continues to pave the way for audio innovation, with recent technology introductions that include Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Pro Logic(R) IIx, Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator, Dolby Digital Recording, and MLP Lossless(TM)," said Ron Vitale, Director of Marketing, Consumer Division, Dolby Laboratories. "These technologies offer consumers a high-quality audio entertainment experience -- wherever the entertainment takes them."
Dolby's advanced audio technologies are featured in a wide range of products from the consumer electronics, personal computing, automobile, and game industries.
Dolby and the Future of Audio
The highlight of the CES booth is Dolby's main theater where the company will showcase leading multichannel audio entertainment with Dolby Digital Plus and MLP Lossless.
Dolby Digital Plus is an advanced, highly sophisticated and versatile audio codec that promises to significantly improve the home entertainment experience. Dolby Digital Plus is designed for future multichannel entertainment in broadcast and packaged media, such as high-definition DVD (HD-DVD) and hard-disk-drive (HDD) media.
The DVD Forum recently selected Dolby Digital Plus as a mandatory audio format for next-generation optical storage media (HD-DVD). For broadcast, Dolby Digital Plus was elevated to candidate standard by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) for possible adoption in future broadcast specifications.
MLP Lossless was also selected by the DVD Forum as the mandatory lossless codec for HD-DVD. MLP Lossless, licensed by Dolby, is the core technology of Advanced Resolution(R) stereo and multichannel DVD-Audio. MLP Lossless delivers music with discrete 5.1-channel surround sound and playback fidelity that is bit-for-bit identical to original studio masters. DVD-Audio is a key technology incorporated in the new DualDisc(TM) (CD and DVD combination) audio format.
DVD-Audio playback is now available in original equipment and aftermarket automotive audio systems, and in dedicated and universal DVD players and PC applications as well as portable DVD players. The Dolby exhibit at CES will feature DVD-Audio demonstrations of the latest DualDisc titles from Silverline Records. The initial DualDisc offerings from Silverline also include "second session" high-efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) files pre-encoded with Dolby Headphone technology. These files are designed to be transferred to Apple(R) iPod(R) players for a realistic multichannel surround sound experience from any set of connected headphones.
Consumer Electronics in the Home
Dolby will be demonstrating the most recent advancement in digital video recording -- the ability for consumers to record and produce personal videos in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. In addition, the exhibit will feature the industry's first television sets with integrated personal video recorders (PVRs) and two-channel Dolby Digital Recording technology.
The Dolby PC Entertainment Experience
In the PC arena, Dolby has teamed with Intel to provide home-theater-quality audio to Intel(R)-processor-based PCs. Dolby is enabling PC manufacturers to offer a range of digital home PCs with integrated system-wide support for Dolby premier technologies under the Dolby PC Entertainment Experience program. Using Intel-based PCs with HD-Audio featuring Dolby licensed software applications and integrated audio codec solutions, Dolby will be demonstrating the following technologies: Dolby Digital Live, Dolby Digital 5.1 Creator, Dolby Headphone, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
Automotive Surround Sound
As a testament to the increase in cars with surround sound, Dolby will be featuring the recently announced 2005 Volvo S80 equipped with Dolby Pro Logic II and the new 2005 Acura RL with DVD-Audio. Dolby continues to partner with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) so that drivers and passengers can enjoy the benefits of surround sound in the comfort of their automobile. Currently, 17 models are available globally that incorporate a Dolby automotive surround technology. Dolby partners Visteon (LVCC North Plaza/NP1) and Boston Acoustics (LVCC North Plaza/NP4) will also feature Dolby demonstration vehicles at CES that integrate Dolby Pro Logic II, DVD-Audio, and the first-ever wireless Dolby Headphone solution available from OEMs for the ultimate in-car surround sound experience.
The Next Level in Gaming
With Dolby technology, game consoles and home theater systems are offering a compelling combination for the next-generation of gaming. Gamers are hooking up game consoles such as the Microsoft(R) Xbox(R) or the Sony(R) Playstation(R) 2 to home theater systems to take full advantage of current and future game titles. Games with Dolby Digital and Dolby Pro Logic II technology offer gamers an interactive, compelling, surround-sound gaming experience.
Dolby's booth at the 2005 International CES, booth no. 20913, is located at the Las Vegas Convention Center's (LVCC) south hall, on the lower level, from January 6-9.

TiVo Inc has a lot of new information on their site about TiVo to go. It looks like you can sign up for their priority list to get the software updates that will enable the TiVoToGo feature. If you have TiVo service update, version 7.1-X then you already have the software you need.
You can fill out a priority sign up form at http://research.tivo.com/tivotogo/ This should get you the software earlier. But according to the web site, "it will take several weeks for you to receive the software after you put in your request."
Right now the option to burn your shows to DVD with Sonic MyDVD is not yet available. You can sign up to be notified of the availability of the software on the TiVo site. It looks like it will be ready sometime in mid-January.
It would be interesting to hear from anyone who's actually using the TiVoToGo service right now.
UPDATE: Here's the official press realease from TiVo
TiVoToGo™ Service Enhancement Allows Subscribers to Enjoy Their Favorite Shows Anytime, Anywhere
January 3, 2005 - ALVISO, CA – TiVo (NASDAQ: TIVO) announced today its new TiVoToGo™ service enhancement is now available and has begun to roll out the software update to standalone TiVo® Series2™ boxes. The TiVoToGo service enhancement allows subscribers to transfer programs from their TiVo box to a laptop to enjoy their favorite shows anywhere, anytime. The TiVoToGo service enhancement is available at no extra charge as part of the TiVo service. TiVoToGo adds to a growing list of exclusive features found only on the TiVo service and not available on generic cable or satellite DVR. These include, Online Scheduling, Season Pass™ recordings, WishList™ searches, and home networked music and photos.
"We're all about delivering lifestyle benefits to our subscribers. Consumers don't want to be tied to their living room to watch their favorite entertainment. Other generic DVRs confine your entertainment experience to the living room, but with TiVoToGo, subscribers can take their favorite shows with them to enjoy on business trips or family vacations," said Matt Wisk, chief marketing officer, TiVo.
How the TiVoToGo™ Service Enhancement Works
TiVo Series2 standalone subscribers, except those with DVD recorders, will automatically receive the new TiVoToGo feature when their DVRs make their routine connection to the TiVo service. TiVo boxes will automatically retrieve the software update necessary to enable the new capability and subscribers will receive a message on their TiVo boxes after they have received the update. TiVo plans to roll out the TiVoToGo feature to DVD recorder subscribers of the TiVo service later this year.
It's easy to transfer programs from a TiVo Series2 box to your laptop. Just connect your TiVo box to your home network, go to www.tivo.com/togo to download and install the free TiVo Desktop software to your laptop computer. The TiVoToGo service enhancement securely encrypts programming during the transfer to the laptop. Once transferred, subscribers enter a password they created during software installation that will allow decryption of the file and playback.
TiVo has carefully designed the TiVoToGo service enhancement to respect the copyrights of copy-protected content while offering flexibility to its subscribers. Programming that is protected with Macrovision copy protection including, PPV, VOD and commercial DVDs, will not be transferable to a laptop.
The TiVoToGo service enhancement will be distributed automatically to TiVo Series2 standalone subscribers through a scheduled rollout process. To sign up for priority distribution, go to www.tivo.com/priority. The TiVo Desktop software for TiVoToGo supports only Windows XP and 2000 operating systems at this time.
This week at the Consumer Electronics Show, TiVo plans to announce a number of new partnerships with technology leaders who are developing new technologies and products that will work with TiVoToGo.
